Under the Aegis of Mars: Armoury of the Princes of Europe is
an exhibitions of important late sixteenth-century ceremonial
armour made for the kings and princes of Europe. The pieces are
on loan from some of the largest European and American armoury
collections, and this is the first time that such a show has been held
at the Invalides.
The exquisite decoration on this solid silver armour (designed by
Franch and Flemish artists) was heavily influenced by the Mannerist Movement. The aim of the exhibition is to take visitors on a journey
back in time, enabling them to visit the worshops of the great
master armourers of the sixteenth century and to see how these
masterpieces were in fact created.
For this unique occasion, the Musée de l'Armée has received a
number of exceptionnal loans from some of the largest armoury
collections in the world. Collaborating institutions include: the
RÜstkammer in Dresden, the Livrustkammaren and Skoloster
holm, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Armeria
Reale in Turin, Royal Armouries in Leeds, as well as the Metropolitan Museum in New-York and the Louvre, the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of the Renaissance at Ecouen, all in France.
